One more year

Peeking at Jhoanna's window display at Hudson - Photo by Kristen Doran

There's something different about the age 27, in my mind. 27 seems a lot older than 26. It's officially late 20s. By 27 you expect people to be well on their way to accomplishing things. Uni days left far behind and getting into their careers. My brothers were married and buying houses by this age. Not that I don't feel that I've accomplished enough but there's a certain extra level of self expectation now.

Anyway... that's my round-about way of saying that today is my birthday :) Just like any ordinary work day (I was spoilt by having my birthday always fall on school holidays) but I'm looking forward to Mum & Dad's this evening and my favourite 'hotpot' for dinner :)

Happy birthday to you! If you want to be introspective about your life so far, wait until you hit 39 like I did this summer... having 40 looming over me is definitely making me think about things ;)

I wish you all happiness in your 27th year!

Happy Birthday!

27 is a good age. It's the last time you'll be "n to the n" years old (i.e. 3 cubed). Unless they somehow develop amazing new technology that allows us to live to 256 years old.

Sorry about that - it's the Maths nerd in me.

In 9 days, I will leave my mid-twenties and enter my late twenties, just like you. I cannot believe that I'm soon entering into my late-twenties. It's not turning out what I imagined it to be.

Have a wondeful birthday. Thus far I think 30 was the best year. It felt like, wow, I'm a grown up, but still cool, and people can see me as a woman of the world. I am 34 now and not sure about the mid-30s and looming late 30s thing. I'm cool with it, it just takes some getting used to.

happy birthday Lara. Enjoy the rest of your day. :) Wow, if I could rewind back to that age and do all the things I've only just started doing.

Happy Birthday!

I am 27 as well (and the husband), but only for another two months.

I agree, you have definitely accomplished a lot already. Selling your own fabrics, and you are in the midst of opening a printing shop too!

Think of how many girls dream of being able to do just one of those things someday, many of them older than you. But I know it can be hard to think of our jobs as special sometimes, it is just what we do every day!

Happy Birthday Lara,
I think you have done quite alot and manymore years to achieve alot more

Happy birthday! I turned 30 this year and thought this would be a major change. Well...

(and whenever I travel home I love those special things my mom cooks :) I guess we´re never too old to enjoy those little treats!)

Happy birthday, may the patterns reveal something magical for you this year.

27 is great, wait till you hit your thirties :) And be grateful that you don't work in education - we just got a fresh batch on first year students today and it was, as always, an "oldifying" experience.

27 seems young to me now that I'm turning 31 (eek)! Enjoy 27, it's a fun age =)

Happy Birthday! I remember 27, although it was a long time ago. The emotions you describe are exactly what I felt at that age. I have to say it was one of my most difficult birthdays. I just turned 50 last month, and to tell you the truth, it was a piece of cake in comparison. I hope that you know nothing stays the same and life is good!!

HBD 2 You! Gosh, and I thought that I was supposed to start acting like an adult now that I'm 35. Sheesh! You've got some sky high expectations there. I think at least until you're 30, you need to do nothing except have fun all the time. Paying the house payment is fun and all...don't get me wrong. ;)

Yay! Happy Birthday! I´m also 27 and it´s a great age ;)

It's all relative. Which is to say, age is relatively irrelevant. I thought I was too old to learn guitar when I was 18 because I had friends who'd started when they were 9 and 12 and were already so good.

We have friends who are in their late 30s who still aren't sure what they want to do with their lives, who they want to spend them with or where they want to live. Elle MacPherson is still hot at she's 44 for Godsakes!

So long as you take relatively good care of yourself you've got heeeuuuuge amounts of time left (as far as you know - rogue buses and trams notwithstanding). One of the good things about getting older is you start to get this base of cumulative experience going - not expertise or knowledge per se, but a much better intuitive feel for what to do at certain points, a better knack for evaluating risk and an ability to nod knowingly, bite tongues and scratch chins with authenticity. It's good.

Take it as it comes and live each age well, they're all slightly different. I don't care terribly for expectations or life deadlines assigned to age.

As my friend would say, "you're on the backside," as in you are on the backside of 20.

1 1/2 months later- hope it was a great day.
