I got a reply from the digital fabric printing place. Lengths of 1-5 metres (140cm wide) costs $100 (AUD). Preedy expensive, but I was expecting that. So hmmm, what to do, what to do. I can't exactly sell yardage at prices like that, so maybe this would be a venture more suited to printing packaging for jewelry and what not. Or perhaps I need to investigate the screen printing option further... any thoughts/suggestions out there?

damn, that IS expensive. i'm totally interested in fabric printing methods at the moment too. i think screen printing would be much cheaper but have no idea where to find a screen printing place that will do short, economical runs. we really both just need some friends with good connections and/or equipment!
why don't you try a local TAFE and see if they would be interested in opening up their printmaking studio over the weekend. You could pay them a fee for the use of their facilites and a staff member to be there. If there were a few of you, it might work out OK. Try Prahran. I have contacts if you think it could work economically. I don't think they would normally do it, but if you sold it to them, they might be interested.
Hi Teil - thats a very good suggestion. Actually you just triggered a similar idea in my head - I was reading the CAE course guide the other day and it said that if you've done a screenprinting course there in the past (which I did a couple of years back) you can book their studio and make use of their equipment. So that's another possibility! Thanks!
wow, that's so weird, i actually just came back to tell you about the studio renting at CAE! i looked into it yesterday after commenting above and mulled over taking the course and then using the studio. i don' t think i'm going to do it this time (too many other things to spend my crafty dollars on at the moment!) but wanted to pass the info on to you.

A fashion designer commissioned me to design some digitally printed textiles earlier this year and the price was pretty much the same. The markups for the finished garments were insane in the end because of the cost of fabric. :/
I don't know anything about screen printing, but it seems like the most affordable/feasible way to print. Wish I could digitally print my designs and sell them but I don't think prices will go down any time soon... but if I do find anything out about it I'll let you know. ;)

Digital fabric printing is very accurate. It really gives proper edging and measures. But it is also very expensive.

similar to the comments already posted... I'm trying to find somewhere that will print a pattern onto a roll of fabric to make sample shirts from. The initial print won't be large. My pattern is a PDF, and will be repeated over and over on the fabric. Any ideas?? Cheers...
Try Spoonflower. Just type into google. You can upload your own image and scale it too. Different costs for different fabrics, and around $18.99 for a yard (0.9mtr) of printed fabric.
