Fire Storms

I keep having terrible mental images of whole families trapped in their cars trying to drive away from the racing flames and just not being able to get away fast enough.

Instead of coveting designer homes & other people's lives on blogs today ... spare a thought for those who might not have either.

Make an online donation at the Australian Red Cross today. It will take you two seconds :)

It's awful isn't it. I'm at work and keep hearing stories of people here who know of people who died or have lost everything. It feels like a giant cloud of despair has settled over Melbourne and things like pretty blogs seem really trivial now. I was thinking of your birdie pattern earlier, I love the one I made as it's so comforting to hold- perhaps bloggers can unite and make lots of Lara Cameron birdies from fabrics they have in their stash and donate them to the kids?

Thanks for telling me how to help. Donation made. We're thinking of all of you and saying our prayers.

Hi Lara,
Yes - I am also struck by such images and the stories of survival that people are telling. It really hits home as far as the terror that they must have been going through. I feel helpless but I'm with renae as I was thinking earlier that perhaps it would be good to do something for the children. Perhaps we could make it a group effort to do a little handmade toy-a-thon - to a specific pattern - or perhaps have a couple of options? - in the same vain as 'softies for mirabel'? I'm sure the craft community could really unite. Thoughts anyone?

Hi, I am hoping to start up a craft auction of handmade items with all proceeds going to the Red Cross, or charity of your choice to help with the bush fire appeals. I would love any help you can provide with promotion, donation or bidding. More info here http://bugandpop.blogspot.com/2009/02/can-it-make-difference.html

Horrible day, can't believe how bad this is turning out to be. :(

I've already donated to the Australian Red Cross but just to let people out there know, some people have already started listing things on etsy and on ebay to raise money. Just search for "victorian bushfire" and you should find stuff.

I guess my thoughts were that the children who have lost everything especially the little ones could really use some comfort in the coming months - and perhaps a handmade toy - made with love - could help even if in just a tiny way..

I saw some of the photos last night. It's really really unbelievably terrible, and I did have nightmares. Thanks for the link for donations.

I think Craft auctions and making softies is a great idea. Instead of starting something new, Pip over at Meet Me at Mikes is rounding up various options of how you can help:

There's plenty of people accepting handmade donations to send off :)

it's hard to imagine how fast the fires were/are moving. victims + their families are in our thoughts today.

i for one have been very much out of the loop. we don't get the papers at home and i barely watch television these days. and there's no news when i do watch tv. radio is a weird thing for me. and the internet.. well.. let's just say i stay out of it as much as possible.

so i'm sorry to say that i've only heard very little about what happened and will find a good chunk of time tomorrow to catch up on the news. it was a big shock to hear about it on the news. i'm so used to hearing about wild fires and burning homes in california (both northern and southern parts) here in the states during seasons of extremely warm weather, but i've never heard about it in other places.

and natural disasters occur on a daily basis somewhere in the world. it is disheartening.

i wish only the best for those affected.

My thoughts go out to you in Australia. Having lived through the mass wildfires in 2003 and 2007 in Southern California and having a house full of people who lost their homes, I know the horrors people are going through.
I wish you all the best.
